Mrs. Heffernan was born in Chicago, went to Our Lady of Peace grammar school and Mercy High School. She received her Bachelor of Education and teachers certificate from Chicago Teachers College, and her Masters degree and Library certificate at Chicago State University.

Widowed since 1983, she has 5 living children: 2 girls and 3 boys.  Also 11 grandchildren (3 girls and 9 boys), ages 3 to 19.

Ever since retiring in 1990, Mrs. Heffernan has enjoyed traveling all over the world.  She has done land trips to  Australia, Hong Kong, London, Ireland, Austria, Germany and Copenhagen.  She likes taking cruises the best however, and has been by ship to the following places:  Alaska, New England, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Tahiti, Panama Canal, the Mediterranean, Scandinavia and Russia!

I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge,
That myth is more potent than history.
I believe that dreams are more powerful than facts
That hope always triumphs over experience
That laughter is the only cure for grief
And I believe that love is stronger than death.
